Capturing Life on Canvas: Levittown Artist’s Stunning Oil Portraits and Landscapes
Artist Tom Furey of Levittown wakes up each morning to leave out food for the cats in the neighborhood before spending the day, from dawn to dusk, painting in his home studio.
For Tom, each day is an opportunity to paint something new, to tell a story through his artwork.
The artist’s passion for painting began around the age of five. His father gave him paint-by-numbers to complete, which Tom greatly enjoyed doing. He also bonded with his grandmother, who enjoyed crafting.
Though he appreciated both paint-by-numbers and crafting, Tom eventually found oil paint to be his medium of choice.
His time in grade school and high school didn’t provide him with the technical skills he had hoped to gain. It wasn’t until he attended Bucks County Community College that his passion truly thrived, and he worked hard to put himself through school by working 60 hours a week.
Before finally making art his full-time career, Tom worked in several industries as a master jeweler, technical illustrator and instructional designer.

Now, he spends each day finding inspiration and capturing moments and feelings on canvas.
“I don’t pick one style to paint,” Tom said. “Sometimes I’m very impressionistic, sometimes I’m very traditional, sometimes contemporary. Whatever the scene calls for, whatever the mood calls for.”
Inspiration begins with a photo, a song, a place, a memory or a poem. From there, he may spend days, months, years or even decades crafting that piece, refining its details.

“I want people to get something and get what I’m expressing and get a feeling from my artwork. Like, I used to enjoy putting my artwork up and having people just stop and stare,” he said. “For me, that was the ultimate compliment. If they stopped and stared and saw that there was something there that they couldn’t put their finger on, but they felt something. That’s what I’m always after.”
When he’s painting, Tom’s focus is never on money or fame; it’s always self-expression and sharing the beauty of the world around him.
“What I’m really doing,” he said, “is trying to share the love I have for humanity with my art.”
